Keiki Kodomo camp has wrapped for the summer. If your family is interested in VFW Basketball, here’s what each grade looks like for the coming year — and one form that tells us how to plan for your child.

We will try to hold monthly clinics so our youngest participants can keep building basketball skills and stay connected to the VFW Youth Group. We will NOT have Kindergarten teams — but we still need to know if you want to continue with clinics through the year so we can start planning them.
Rising First Graders
If there are enough interested players and parents willing to volunteer, we can form a team that practices in our gyms and plays in spring tournaments. Each team needs a parent volunteer to coach and a parent volunteer to be Team Representative. First graders are NOT eligible for the SEYO League Winter Season until 2nd grade, but this gives players and teams a head start. This is the VFW Youth Group’s first year accepting 1st graders to a team.
Rising Second Graders
This is the year SEYO organizations usually form new teams. Teams are formed based on the availability of players, coaches, and team reps — so make sure to include the names of other players your child would like to play with. Second grade teams must play in the SEYO Winter Season: 10 Sunday afternoons, December through February.
More than a place to play
Please keep in mind that we are here to help build a community for your family — not just a place for your child to play basketball. All new 1st and 2nd grade players who are placed on a team register as members of the VFW Youth Group, and families are expected to fulfill volunteer duties as part of the group. Save the date: VFW Tournament, October 10–11
Our Invitational is for 3rd–12th grade teams only, but new families will be asked to volunteer some time to support this big event. It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year and goes toward gym rentals, equipment, and activities.
We play in SEYO
VFW Youth Group supports the Kazuo Masuda Memorial VFW Post 3670 in Garden Grove and is one of the member organizations of SEYO — the Southeast Youth Organization. League games are Sunday afternoons at gyms across North Orange County: Cypress, Westminster, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Huntington Beach, and Fountain Valley. Beyond league play, VFW teams travel to tournaments throughout California — and host our own Invitational every October.

Fees (2025–26, subject to change)
- $295 — Winter or Spring season registration
- $5 — SEYO family lifetime membership (new families)
- $45 — VFW player membership (new players)
Gym fees are waived through VFW fundraising — the annual tournament, Poker Night, and season registrations keep costs down for every family.
Joining
Rising TK, K, 1st, and 2nd graders: start with the 2026–27 planning form above. For grades 3–12 we'll contact you if an opening comes up on a current team — start with the interest form / waitlist. New teams form over the summer, with priority for Keiki Kodomo campers and siblings of current or former VFW players.

More than basketball
VFW is run entirely by volunteers, and every family helps keep it running. Fundraising and service offset gym fees, equipment, scorekeepers, and referees — and build the community that makes VFW special.
VFW Tournament (October)
Players play, parents volunteer — commissioning games, front table, setup and cleanup, and hospitality. Each team sells $1,000 in ads or sponsorships for the tournament book in lieu of a registration fee.
Veterans outreach
Teams bring snacks to a VFW Post 3670 monthly meeting once a year, help with the Memorial Day ceremony, and pitch in on Post clean-up days.
Poker Night (spring)
Our scholarship fundraiser — each team helps sell tickets and contributes raffle and silent-auction prizes. Attending is optional (and fun).
Community events
Year-round service with partners like Warm Hearts — recent drives collected socks in winter and backpacks in summer for veterans and families in need.
